I think the Neapolitan Dialect is fascinating, not just the way the words sound, but the way they look. It felt like the perfect start for a small typography project. In this project, I wanted to fuse modern, sharp typography with a language whose roots can be traced back to before the Roman Empire to symbolise the constant presence in Naples of the dialect and how it evolves and modernises from generation to generation.
I chose to create the typography using only straight edges, triangles and squares, keeping it modular as I felt it made the words harder to read. I want the viewer to focus on the letters and put the sentences together the same way I did as a child, one letter at a time.
These words and sentences are from the titles of Pino Daniele's tracks, one of the greatest Neapolitan musicians of all time, a real personal favourite.
